For more than two decades I have been researching my family history, not only direct lines but all the collateral lines as well [I have a list of the most abundant surnames in my lines listed at the bottom of the page - chances are if you have any family history in the South, especially the Florida/Alabama/Georgia areas, we will have some surnames in common - somewhere]. One of the activities I thoroughly enjoy is the photographing of entire cemeteries. Past experience has taught me that if I only photograph those markers for those that I know are kin, I will end up making another trip to photograph those that are kin but I didn't know it on the first trip. Yes, it can be very time consuming, especially in very large cemteries, but in the long run, it usually saves another trip AND familial lines can be discovered by reading the headstones. I share these photos on Find A Grave so that others can have access as well. I have discovered that these photos make some wonderful backgrounds in my scrapbook layouts as well. With all that in mind, I set out to create a kit that I could use to create memorial/tribute pages to those in my family that are no longer living --- either from generations back or recent losses. I plan to create a Family Memorials book that will include photos of the person [when and if available], some information about them - or my memories of them - and where their final resting place is. The following layouts are some of the ideas I have kicking around. They really are not the completed versions but a general idea so that you may see what can be done with the kit/s and hopefully will give you some inspiration to create your own pages.

WOW! iNSD is over and the weekend celebrations are over. Just like any good party, it's great while it's going on but then there is that sigh when it's over - and a bit of time for relaxing and cleaning up. I hope everyone had a really wonderful time, no matter where you were and have lots and lots of goodies to scrap with. There were some really great deals going on and I discovered a few new designers that do some fabulous work as well.

I want to thank everyone that purchased something of mine this weekend and a special "thank you" goes out to all of you who participated in the "Hide-a-Kit" event at DigiZines, DeZines. I always enjoy doing those and look forward to doing another one there.

As most of you know, I really enjoy my heritage hunting. I've been at it for many years and recently I've been uploading my cemetery photos to Find-a-Grave. What a great site that is and it has helped me locate many many family connections. So, as payback [or play it forward], I've been cataloging my photos and uploading them so that others may find someone they are looking for. So far, all of my photos are in FLA or AL. When I go "cemetery stompin'" I take at least one of my kids and they help me photograph the ENTIRE cemetery. Yep, when there, it is always good to do the whole place, even if it is HUGE [which some are], because you never know if someone else is there that you are not even aware of yet. Sure beats a second trip if you have to travel far.

If anyone has any burial information that they'd like to share, you can alway add a memorial - and you don't have to have the photo --- someone else might.

I talked to my Mom early this morning because she had some things she was doing today as I was as well - so we wished each other a happy day and we'll talk more later.

Hide-a-Kit Comes to The Studio!

It's up and ready for you to find! What's ready, you ask? I have finished zipping the individual pieces of my Easter Lily kit, which you will need to find. [Yes, I know, I CAN be evil when I want]. What to do? What to do?

Search The Studio store and while you are looking at products, see if you spot any Easter Eggs. They will look like this:

Just click on the egg and you should be directed to a download. When you have found all the eggs, you will have a complete kit - FREE!

These eggs will remain in the store until Monday, when they will be removed and this game will be over - so make sure you find them all and don't waste time. When it's over, it's over.

There are 32 downloads and they are numbered 1, 2, 3, etc. This will make it easy for you to keep track of what you have found and what is still out there.

This Month ....

has just FLOWN by! Where did the time go? Things have been really busy since Thanksgiving and the days have seem to just about get started before they are over. As usual, I haven't done half the things I've wanted to do and in all honesty, I really dread the holidays. There was a time when I couldn't wait for them to get here but the last couple of years have just been really bad as far as holidays are concerned. I didn't decorate - not even a tree. I just can't seem to get my heart into it - my Dad really LOVED Christmas and the whole sha'bang but since he's gone it just really bites!

I did get a new kit done with a matching Quick Page Album. They are both HUGE and it is entitled "January" and centers around January being a birth month. The series will include all 12 months when completed and I am currently working on February.

Is Janet Napolitano for Real?

I am at a loss. I don't believe this. I just don't believe this. When the Transportation Security Administration [TSA] says you must submit to a body scan before flying through an airport that has this equipment or physical pat-down , Janet Napolitano is considering exempting Muslim women from these body searches. Whaaaat?

Yep. If you refuse the scan and body search, you may be arrested and have to pay an $11,000 fine. AND you will not be allowed to just leave the airport if you refuse. You can't just say, "Forget it, I'll drive." You will be detained and interrogated as to why you will not submit. Then on a case, by case basis, you may be taken away in cuffs and searched anyway.

Bad huh? But what is really bad is that if you a Muslim woman, you can plead your religion and claim that this is invasive and offensive. Excuuuuuuse me.... if it were not for Muslims [YEAH, I SAID MUSLIMS because it wasn't the Jews, Methodists, Friends, Mormons, etc that attacked the USA on 9/11], we would not be subject to this type of "security" in the first place.

Yes, Janet Napolitano is considering exempting Muslim women from this. Oh, let's not offend them. WAKE UP!

Education and Illegal Immigrants

Okay, here we go again. I really, really try not to voice political views on this blog as I'd really like it to be a place for family connections via heritage research and scrapping fun, but I'm at it again.

California's Supreme Court just upheld its' state law allowing ILLEGAL immigrants to pay their college tuition at resident rates while out-of-state LEGAL CITIZENS must pay a higher rate. Yeah, that's fair. My question is: If we know these people are illegal, why are they still here? It's not like that have to be hunted down or anything. Everyone at these schools KNOW who the illegals are. When they show up for class, take 'em away and send them back to their own country - where that country may be.

In his infinite wisdom , Texas A&M's Student Body President, Jacob Robinson, vetoed a bill [S.B. 63-11] which PASSED 48-21 by the student Senate to stop this same practice of ILLEGAL residents paying resident rates. Let's hope this veto gets overturned.

The very fact that they are termed "ILLEGAL" tells you that they are breaking a U.S. Law. Why does our Government refuse to do anything about it - yet they still go after "moonshiners" [yes, they still exist and yes, they are still hunted down and their stills destroyed]. How many people are arrested for Trespassing each year? Hmmmm..... these illegals are also trespassing yet nothing is done to rectify the situation except that our crazy gov't welcomes them with open arms.

Bravo to South Carolina and Georgia for being the only two states in the Union to BAN illegals from attending any college in their respective states. What is wrong with the other 48 states?

I am not against immigration. Everyone in this country, with the exception of the Native American Indians, are either immigrants to this country or the descendants of immigrants. How are these practices fair to those that chose to come to America legally? have become citizens? paid their taxes? It's not.

Wake up America. Stop trying to be so "politically correct" and uphold the laws that you were hired/elected to uphold.

I've been busy. Right now I'm in the middle of designing a kit for the December Designer Collabortive at Heritage Scrap. We have a great color palette to work with and I can't wait to see what the other designers come up with as well. And....

I've been cleaning up several external hard drives and ran across a few things so I thought I'd start giving away some of this older stuff. There's a plethora of kits, pieces, QP's and more that I'm just going to put on here for you all to enjoy [I hope] as I get time.

Here's the first. It's a kit I created waaaay back when I was just learning. It's not too shabby and maybe you can get some use out of it.

What is Going On?

I don't normally do this, but this has been bothering me since reading about this. The article I am referring to is here: Student Told to Take U.S. Flag Off Bike . The jist of the story is that there is a middle school child that has placed the US Flag on the back of the bicycle he rides to school. The principal has told him to remove the flag so as not to create racial tension. HELLLLLO! This is the US of A and it is our National Flag. The principal cited problems arising from Hispanic students displaying the Mexican Flag for Cinco de Mayo. Ummmm..... was it displayed ABOVE the US Flag? If it was, this is a no-no. Was it larger than the US Flag [as displayed by the school and hopefully in each classroom?] Again, if it was, this is also a no-no. If not, what was the issue? Does this principal not have control over the students? Since when has it become a matter of racial tension to display the flag of the country we live in and love? Whom are we offending? The principal stated that other students complained. Well, too bad for them. If they are LEGAL American Citizens, and they complained, they should hang their heads in shame. If they are ILLEGAL trespassers in the US, they should get the hell out.

Can you imagine even visiting a different foreign country [England, France, Italy, Sweden for example] and complaining that the display of their national flag offends you. Get Real! When did the US become home to such kowtowing behavior? I am sick to death of the "political correctness" everyone is so eager to display in this country. Bullshit. Who are the racists? Who are the bigots? I don't care who you are, you don't like somebody for some reason and someone else will always find a reason [well, he's black, he parts his hair on the side, he drives a porsche, she has three kids, she has Asian friends, he doesn't make enough money, she quit school - there is always a reason that someone else will pick up on and try to label you as something you are not]. Admit to it, it means you are human. I no longer care if people think I am a racist, bigot, ignorant, pauper, too short, too fat, too loud, ugly, old, etc., etc. If asked, I will answer honestly. I tired of worrying about others' feelings - no one worries about mine.

Having said all this, I now say....

If you don't like it here in the U.S. and are offended by our patriotism - GET THE HELL OUT AND DON'T COME BACK! Stop taking our money and go back where you came from. "My" America no longer has the time nor inclination to continue to listen to your whining.

Stone Works is one of my favorite kits. I love the warm colors and variety of elements but I really love the look of chiseled stone that some of the elements look like they were created from. Daddy loved stone and rock. He built a a fireplace in our home and the wall that it was on had wall to wall white Italian marble that he did himself. The fireplace was centered and he made a gorgeous solid wood mantle above it. His love of stone really showed itself throughout our yard. Rock walls were EVERYWHERE! He even created rock walls to line both sides of the stream that ran through out backyard.

Another Legend Passes Thru Time

It is with great sadness that I just read of the passing of Tony Curtis. Although he was only slightly older than my father, I always felt a great attraction for this legendary actor. My father and I loved to watch "old" movies. At least they were old for me. I remember watching "The Black Shield of Falworth" with my Dad and him laughing hard when Mr. Curtis said his lines with a New York accent -- the story takes place in Great Britian. I have many happy memories of watching TC movies with my Dad. Another favorite of ours was "The Great Imposter".
I think Mr. Curtis was a great great actor. Granted, some of his movies were fluff, but he ALWAYS entertained, which is what he obviously loved to do. He succeeded. He did what he loved and didn't seek media attention in other ways.
My heart goes out to his children, who, no matter their age, will miss their father dearly for the rest of their lives.

Thank you for all the wonderful years, Tony!

Life Book III Started at Heritage Scrap

Life Book III has begun at Heritage Scrap with Victorian Rose [Vicki Pasterik] giving us a complete step-by-step. Thank goodness! I need the step-by-step as I have wanted to do this for such a long time now and having others do their own books at the same time is perfect for giving and getting ideas. It began this past Monday but it is not too late to join. Yes, Vicki does this for FREE [just a way of passing along the {heritage} addiction.
This week we were to create a cover for our book. I took it a tad further and created a few of the front interior pages as well.

This is to be the Cover. This image shows it opened with the back cover on the left and the front cover on the right.

This is the very first "page" you will see upon opening the book, it is my dedication page. I am making this book for my children. Fortunately they were all old enough [the youngest was 14] that they will always have great memories that they will be able to pass down to their children/grandchildren as well. This book will also include stories that I remember him telling me and that happened when my sister and I were children.

The page on the left will be the backside of the above page and the page on the right will be the facing page.

There is still plenty of time to join in.... why not check it out?

I've been very busy lately with lots of stuff that has been going on at home. Right now my daughter is my main concern as she has left for a bit on a trip. We fight like crazy [what do you expect? She is 17 and KNOWS ALL and I am just her mother that DOESN'T KNOW ANYTHING! ] but I miss her. Of course I am "babysitting" her dog and puppy which is alot easier to do than a grandchild or two. I'm too young to be a grandmother and happily, she agrees.

My First Chat at Heritage Scrap

WOW! I didn't choke up! I had my first chat at Heritage Scrap. It was basically a "get to know me" chat and I'm normally shy around people I don't know --- UNTIL I GET TO KNOW YOU! I have been getting a little better over the years but I still get those butterflies [that seem the size of crows]. Well, I had fun and I'm hoping my new friends did too.

This was sent to me by an older cousin. I graduated in the late 70's and it still applied then [except the paddling] --- and I never thought I'd LONG for those days again.

HIGH SCHOOL -- 1955 vs. 2010

Scenario 1:
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.

1955 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.

2010 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.

1955 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.

2010 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged them with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.

1955 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.

2010 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The school gets extra money from the state because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

1955 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.

2010 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.

1955 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.

2010 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:
Pedro fails high school English.

1955 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.

2010 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.

1955 - Ants die.

2010 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents -- and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.

1955 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing..

2010 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy..

I'm really excited to be a part of Heritage Scrap. What a wonderful digital scrapbooking site that --- are you ready for this --- is completely devoted to heritage scrapping [did ya'll get that from the name?]

Can you imagine? A place where you can go on and on about your heritage, research AND scrapping it without that groan that you normally hear from those that are not part of the mad group called GENEALOGISTS!

I don't know about you, but my relatives have all gotten caller ID and it's funny that when I call, I get some pre-recorded message stating something to the effect that they have moved and no forwarding info. Well, I guess that beats getting the family bible thrown at you when you appear on their doorstep or being referred to as that "crazy lady that keeps talking about the dead". One of my Aunts would just sigh and ask me, "What do you want to know today, Lisa?" [but she would talk about it for HOURS!]

But I digress [as usual]. Heritage Scrap is having a MONTH LONG BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION! If you haven't checked out this site yet, please do so. If you are as passionate about your heritage as I am and love to scrap, this is THE place to be.

I Won - Sorta

I entered [late] a challenge that really was A CHALLENGE. The challenge was to scrap 8 different toddlers into a "scene". All 8 of the little tykes had to be used and she provided the children [thank goodness because I don't think I could have gone thru labor 5 more times to get the required "8"] --- WOW!

This was my entry:

There are 3 chances to win.... 1st [by vote], 2nd [by vote] and Challenger's Choice --- I won the Challenger's Choice. Whoo Hoo! This is my first "win". I'm so honored that the lady that ran the challenge liked mine best. I feel special.

Here it is, my first Blog Challenge.

I have provided you with a DigiGuide, you dress it up and make it your own. Mostly these are called "Templates", but I prefer the term "Guide" because that is what I'd like you to use it as... a guide. "Template" brings to mind a "cookie cutter" use, whereas I prefer that you use your imagination.

Below are two different layouts that I created using this same guide. I came up with two completely different looks and ideas --- what can YOU come up with???

You have until July 21st to come up with your interpretation.

I was a GOOD GIRL!

Instead of deep-frying my chicken tonight for dinner, I baked it. I dipped it in water, then flour, then re-dipped in water, some bread crumbs, and BAKED IT! -- no salt. My son wanted french fries and made them himself [I'm impressed!], and they turned out PERFECT. Yes, they were deep fried, but I only ate 6 - again, no salt. I never was a big salt person to begin with so that wasn't hard to do. I felt like a snack later and so I had one... string beans with red wine vinegar, no salt, no oil. I know Donna said I could have 2 days off a week, but I just started so I think I'll just save those day for next weekend. Hmmmmm.... what am I going to have tomorrow?
